One day ski ascent/descent of Mt. Baker via Easton Glacier

Phil and I connected via the Turns All Year Partners Wanted board, and decided to try to ski Mount Baker via Easton Glacier, car to summit to car, in one day. We were by no means sure we would succeed, as Rainer Burgdorfer says in his popular guidebook: "Most mortals require two days to reach the summit."

We met in Burlington (since Phil was driving from Bellingham and I was driving from Seattle) at 4am on Sunday, June 12 and then drove one car to the trailhead. We had to park 2 miles from the trailhead due to the snow covering the road. We left the car at 5:15am. We reached the summit at 5pm. The summit plateau was extremely windy, and the top about 100 feet of our descent were on hard crust. Below that, however, the snow was great — in some places perfect — corn, all the way till the exit from the glacier. An 8000ft 17 mile day complete with my first Cascade volcano summit and a great new partner who also happened to bring a great new beer to top off the day. A truly remarkable outing.

I generated the topomap with our route.
